Healing is a gift.

The woman left her home that day, not knowing she would return healed.

She kept to herself because of past choices, shamed into a life of solitude. She was used to it.

Arriving at the well, she met Jesus. “If you knew the gift of God,” he said, “and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

Living water? She didn’t see anything like that around, and he seemed ill-equipped to provide such a gift. She said as much.

He promised her water to quench all thirst, “a well of water springing up…for eternal life.”

She wanted this life-giving gift but first, she and Jesus had an uncomfortable conversation. It wasn’t shaming or condemning. They just spoke plainly about the truths of her life and where she was stuck.
And then she was free. A few simple words from the One she now understood was the Messiah. He was the gift from God her people had been waiting for.

She left her water jar behind and went to tell others who she’d found.

Jesus offers us all the same gift of healing. He provides a safe place for us to have a conversation with him about the wounds of our heart. It may be difficult at first, but it ends in peace.

Receive “the peace of God, which passes all understanding,” which “will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Then pass it on.
